Understanding Natural Skincare

Look at a bottle containing a skincare product. The labels contain terms describing their product like vegan, cruelty-free, organic, clean, and natural.

Understanding what the terms natural and clean skincare mean will help you know what kind of ingredients are in the products you use.

What is Natural Skincare?

In the world of skincare and cosmetics, there is no regulated term for what natural means. Many companies have their own definition for what they believe natural means in the skincare industry.

To some skincare creators, natural could be that there is one ingredient in their product that is natural. They will then claim that their product is natural because it contains a natural ingredient.

Others could define natural as naturally derived ingredients.

What is the Difference Between Clean and Natural Skincare?

Another term in the world of skincare and cosmetics is clean. Clean means that this product does not contain any toxic ingredients.

The difference between natural and clean skincare is a clean skincare product can contain man-made ingredients and natural ingredients. On the other hand, natural skincare products should only or mostly contain natural ingredients.

Because the FDA does not have clear and defined terms on clean and natural skincare, you should always look at the ingredients and determine if the product you are using is safe for your skin.

Are Natural Products Really Better?

Natural skincare products are not always better. Some natural items could be harmful to your skin. For example, poison ivy is natural, but that does not mean that it is safe for your skin.

What can you do to know the natural ingredients you are using are safe and best for your skin? Do your research. Also, you should buy from companies that are straightforward and honest about what is in their skincare products.

Moisturizers and Oily Skin

When hearing about using a moisturizer on your oily skin, it could make you wince. The idea of adding more oils to already oily skin sounds wrong. Keep reading to find out if using a moisturizer on oily skin is beneficial or not.

Is Face Moisturizer Good For Oily Skin?

Often people wonder if using a face moisturizer is good for their oily skin. The answer is yes! Using a face moisturizer on oily skin will help keep the skin hydrated. In turn, it will keep the oil production under control.

Some people with oily skin believe that it is best to use products that will dry out their skin and rid their faces of oil. This only lasts for a little while because your skin will want to go into overdrive and produce more oil. It does this because it is irritated.

What is the key to keeping oily skin hydrated? You need to look at the ingredients used in the skincare products. You will want to lean towards products that contain very few oils. The oils in the products you use should be non-comedogenic.

When Should You Apply Moisturizer for Oily Skin?

People with oily skin can apply face moisturizer two times per day. It is recommended they use it in their AM and PM skincare routines.

Using a natural face moisturizer for oily skin multiple times per day will keep your skin free of irritations and help regulate oil production.

Natural Face Moisturizer for Oily Skin Key Ingredient Overview

Understanding the ingredients in the skincare products you use will help you know how the product is benefiting your skin.

Water Phase

The ingredients in your water phase are not heat sensitive. These ingredients add hydration and anti-inflammatory properties to the natural face moisturizer for oily skin.

Witch Hazel Hydrosol

An ingredient beneficial in skincare products for oily skin is witch hazel. Witch hazel can come in many different forms. When looking at which kind of witch hazel to purchase, make sure it is alcohol-free.

In the natural face moisturizer for oily skin formulation, the witch hazel we use is hydrolyzed.

Witch hazel contains anti-inflammatory properties and helps oily skin avoid different skin conditions. It is used to treat acne, eczema, and rosacea.

Another benefit of witch hazel is it helps soothe the skin and prevent irritation.

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein

One of the hydrating ingredients used in the water phase is hydrolyzed wheat protein. Wheat protein is known to help hydrate and soothe irritated skin.

Another benefit of wheat protein is it gives your skin a smoother, softer feel.

If you are gluten intolerant, you should avoid using wheat protein and substitute it for rice protein.

Glycerin

A popular ingredient in skincare formulations is glycerin. This ingredient is hydrating and friendly towards all skin types.

Glycerin is a humectant. This means that it helps the skin retain moisture. Using glycerin in a natural face moisturizer helps your skin continue to stay hydrated hours after applying.

Aloe Vera

When looking for ingredients that are best for oily skin, you want to find ones that contain soothing properties. Aloe vera is one of these ingredients.

Not only does aloe vera soothe the skin, but it is another ingredient that adds moisture to the skin.

Oil Phase

The oil phase in our formulation contains the emulsifier and other oil and wax-based ingredients. The oils we choose for a natural face moisturizer for oily skin need to be non-comedogenic.

Jojoba Oil

One of the oils used in this formulation is jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is a unique oil. This is because it is not an oil but a liquid wax. Because of the liquid esters that jojoba oil contains, it resembles our skin’s sebum.

Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic and will not clog your pores.

Hemp Seed Oil

Another oil used in our natural face moisturizer for oily skin is organic hemp seed oil. There are many benefits that hemp seed oil offers the skin. Some of the benefits of hemp seed oil are it reduces dryness, itchiness, and water loss.

Hemp seed oil is not greasy!

It also contains many minerals. The minerals in hemp seed oil are:

  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Sulfur
  • Potassium
  • Phosphorus

Cetyl Alcohol

Some may consider cetyl alcohol as a non-natural ingredient. After doing some research, I found that cetyl alcohol is naturally derived from palm oil. This makes it an ingredient that is found in nature.

Cetyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol and does not dry out your skin. It acts as an emollient and helps the skin stay hydrated and soft.

Cetyl alcohol is used in lotions and moisturizers because it adds a smooth, creamy texture to the finished product.

Oliven 1000 MB

Our emollient is oliven 1000. This is a COSMOS and natural ingredient. It is manufactured using palm oil.

LotionCrafter recommends using 7-8% in formulations of high viscosity. Such as lotions and creams.

I normally use Emulsifying Wax NF in my skincare formulations because it is a clean ingredient. It is also easy to work with.

Cool-Down Phase

The final phase in our formulation of natural face moisturizer for oily skin is the cool-down phase. The ingredients in the cool-down phase are heat sensitive and are added when the combined water and oil phase is down to room temperature.

Leucidal Complete

Our natural preservative is leucidal complete. This preservative is broad-spectrum and fights off bacteria, yeast, and mold in our natural skincare products.

I like using Leucidal Complete vs. Leucidal SF Complete because of the pH levels. It has a lower pH levels at 5.0-9.0. On the other hand, Leucidal SF Complete is best in pH levels of 7.0-10.0.

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile extract is another star ingredient for oily skin because it contains anti-inflammatory properties and soothes irritation. It also helps care for sensitive skin types.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

The last key ingredient in our natural face moisturizer for oily skin is tea tree essential oil. This oil is used in our formulation because it contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Ingredient Substitutions for Natural Face Moisturizer for Oily Skin

Any substitutions done to the recipe could make the formulation come out with a different texture, consistency, and offer different benefits.

Water Substitution

A large percentage of our recipe is water. You may use more witch hazel hydrosol as a substitution. You are also able to use other hydrosols as well.

Some hydrosols that are beneficial to oily skin are:

  • Rose Hydrosol
  • Chamomile Hydrosol
  • Apple Hydrosol

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein Substitution

For a substitute for hydrolyzed wheat protein, you can use other hydrolyzed proteins. One of the hydrolyzed proteins that you can use is rice.

Hydrolyzed rice protein is gluten-free. It is also gentle for all skin types.

Jojoba Oil Substitution

If you are looking for different oils to substitute for jojoba oil, you want to focus on what oils are non-comedogenic and will not clog your pores. Some non-comedogenic oils you can use are:

  • Argan Oil
  • Blackberry Seed Oil
  • Blueberry Seed Oil
  • Goji Berry Seed Oil
  • Hemp Seed Oil
  • Safflower Seed Oil

And the list could go on. Look for oils that have a comedogenic rating of 0.

Cetyl Alcohol Substitution

A substitution for cetyl alcohol is cetearyl alcohol. These are both fatty alcohols that are clean skincare friendly.

Leucidal Complete Substitution

There are a few different natural preservatives that you can use to substitute for leucidal complete. These natural preservatives run in the leucidal family. Two preservatives are Leucidal SF Complete and Leucidal SF Max.

I would substitute Leucidal SF Max before Leucidal SF Complete due to the pH levels in which they are active. Leucidal SF Max can be in a pH range of 4.0-11.0. On the other hand, Leucidal SF Complete is best in pH levels of 7.0-10.0

Correcting the pH

At the end of the formulation, we will check the pH to make sure this natural face cream for oily skin is at a pH level of around 5 because witch hazel needs to be at a pH level of 2.5 to 5.0, and our preservative needs to be at pH levels of 5.0-9.0.

To adjust the pH, you can use citric acid to make it more acidic and baking soda to make it alkaline.
