What Can I Mix with Aloe Vera for Glowing Skin?

Although using only aloe will help your skin glow, adding certain ingredients will help your skin radiate. One ingredient you can use to help with glowing skin is green tea extract. This extract protects the skin from free radical damage and helps the skin reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Another ingredient that helps with glowing skin is chamomile extract. Chamomile extract helps the skin glow by soothing it.

Ingredients in Aloe Vera Face Mask for Glowing Skin

Phase A

Phase A contains three ingredients. We have these ingredients in a separate phase from the other ingredients because xanthan gum needs to be mixed with glycerin. This is so it does not become chunky in the face mask.

When you mix xanthan gum and glycerin with French green clay, it becomes a paste.

Glycerin

A popular ingredient in skincare products is glycerin. Glycerin is a humectant that will draw moisture from the environment around you and into the skin. This helps to hydrate the skin.

Xanthan Gum Soft

Xanthan gum soft is the gelling ingredient in our aloe vera face mask DIY recipe. Adding xanthan gum to the recipe will help the final products spread easily on the skin.

Mixing xanthan gum with glycerin before it is introduced to other ingredients will help it dissolve and not be chunky in the final product.

French Green Clay

The final ingredient in phase A is French green clay. There are two main purposes for using French green clay in our homemade aloe vera face mask for glowing skin.

The first purpose for using French green clay is because of the detoxing benefits it has for the skin. It will help the aloe vera face mask draw out the excess oils, dead skin cells, and black and whiteheads from the skin. Adding it to the jelly face mask helps make the French green clay gentle to the skin and not as drying to the skin as if you applied it with just water.

The second reason for using French green clay is to add a natural green color to the aloe vera face mask.

Phase B

The second phase in the aloe vera face mask recipe is phase B. This phase consists of all other ingredients in the recipe, including our preservative.

Aloe Vera Liquid

The star ingredient in our face mask for glowing skin is aloe vera. Aloe vera is known to contain skin-soothing properties and antioxidants. It also helps balance the natural oils of the skin while hydrating the dry areas.

Aloe vera is full of polyphenols. These polyphenols act as antioxidants by guarding the skin against environmental stressors.

Aloe vera also contains many vitamins and minerals.

Minerals in Aloe Vera:
  • Calcium
  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • Magnesium
  • Chromium
  • Copper
  • Manganese
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
Vitamins in Aloe Vera:

Cucumber Hydrosol

Another soothing ingredient in the aloe vera face mask for glowing skin is cucumber hydrosol. Cucumber hydrosol adds a slight fresh scent of cucumbers to the face mask.

Cucumber hydrosol is known to help hydrate the skin and reduce signs of aging. It also helps soothe inflammation and skin issues such as acne.

DL Panthenol

A powder ingredient in our aloe vera face mask DIY recipe is DL Panthenol. DL Panthenol is also known as vitamin B5.

The main benefit of DL Panthenol is it can deeply penetrate the skin and help with restoring and maintaining moisture. This helps the skin stay hydrated and smooth. It also has humectant properties that help attract and hold moisture to the skin.

Green Tea Extract

The first extract in phase B is green tea. Green tea contains antioxidants protects the skin from free radical damage.

When the skin is protected from free radicals, it will be less damaged and reduce the signs of aging by increasing the elasticity of the skin.

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile extract is gentle on sensitive skin and helps to soothe irritated skin. Because chamomile is a soothing ingredient, it helps our aloe vera face mask for glowing skin sooth skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

Another benefit chamomile extract offers the skin is it contains anti-inflammatory properties. These anti-inflammatory properties help protect the skin from free radical damage and stressors in the environment that could cause premature aging of the skin.

Chamomile is an ingredient in our aloe vera face mask for glowing skin.

Leucidal SF Max

The final ingredient in phase B is our preservative, Leaucidal SF Max. This is a broad-spectrum preservative that fights against mold, yeast, and bacteria.

Leucidal SF Max gives formulators extra confidence on the pH front. The pH levels this preservative is effective in are from 4.0 to 11.0. Because of this large pH range, this preservative is easy for beginner skincare formulators to use.

Substitutions for Ingredients in Aloe Vera Face Mask for Glowing Skin

If you would like to make this recipe your own, you may try some substitutions in the recipe. Any substitutions done to the recipe will make the serum contain different benefits, and it may possess a different feel to it as well.

Xanthan Gum Soft Substitution

Xanthan gum soft is the gelling agent in this aloe vera face mask for glowing skin recipe. When looking for a substitution for xanthan gum soft, it needs to have some gelling properties.

One substitution for xanthan gum soft is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid will add more hydrating benefits to your face mask. When looking for a hyaluronic acid to use, you should choose one that has a high molecular weight.

French Green Clay Substitution

When looking for a substitution for French green clay in your aloe vera face mask for glowing skin, you will want to choose a clay so your face mask still contains detoxing benefits.

You can use different kaolin and bentonite clays. If you are looking for a clay that works best for sensitive skin, then you may want to use white kaolin clay.

Cucumber Hydrosol Substitution

There are many different hydrosols you can substitute for cucumber hydrosol. You can mix different hydrosols as well. I would recommend testing the hydrosols together first to know if you like the scent they create when they are mixed.

Some hydrosol that would work as substitutions for cucumber is rose and chamomile. Both rose and chamomile hydrosols act as anti-inflammatories helping soothe the skin.

Green Tea and Chamomile Extract Substitution

There are many different extracts that you can choose to be in your aloe vera face mask for glowing skin.

For example, if you would like to add pore-reducing benefits, you can add strawberry extract. If you want more antioxidant benefits, you can add blueberry extract.

Leucidal SF Max Substitution

Finally, we can look at the different substitutes for the preservative in the recipe for our aloe vera face mask for glowing skin.

One preservative that you can use as a substitute is leucidal complete. This preservative works in pH levels between 5.0-9.0. The pH of our face mask falls in between these pH levels, with a preferred pH of 6.0.

The pH of Aloe Vera Face Mask for Glowing Skin

Understanding the pH of your aloe vera face mask for glowing skin is very important because the pH determines if our preservative and other ingredients will work. There are a few pH picky ingredients in the recipe.

These ingredients are:

  • Xanthan Gum Soft: 6.0-8.0
  • DL Panthenol: 4.0-7.0, with the optimal pH being 6.0.
  • Chamomile Extract: 3.0-6.0

The ideal pH for our aloe vera face mask is 6.0. To obtain this pH level, you will need to use baking soda or raise the pH and citric acid to lower the pH. When using baking soda and citric acid to raise and lower pH, you will need to use only a little because a small amount will go a long way.

There are three different pH meters that you can use to measure the pH of your aloe vera face mask for glowing skin. The most accurate pH meter is the Extech PH110. This will give you an accurate pH level of your skincare products.

Three pH Meters to Check Out:

pH.1-14 Test Paper

The pH test strips are best for skincare formulators who do not what to spend a lot of money.

MEKBOK Digital PH Meter Tester

This pH meter will give you the pH level of liquid skincare. I would say it is not as accurate as the Extech PH 110, but it will give you a general idea of what pH level your skincare is at.

Extech PH110 Waterproof ExStik pH Meter

This pH meter is similar to the one I use. I really like this pH meter because it will give me the pH reading of liquids and solids.
